Jailbreaking a Touch...

...is for suckers. A friend recently tried it (again) and basically found that most of the "apps" either suked (slow@ss emulators) or just plain didn't work. The only neat thing was an app that allowed you to quick pull some of the settings (wifi, bluetooth, screen brightness) without going through the rigmarole of opening "settings" and scrolling around to the various sections and a way to hide apps you didn't want cluttering up your "desktop" - like all the unused icons and apps that the iPod Touch comes with that I would uninstall if I could - I'm looking at you, Stocks, Weather, Clock (there is one at the top of the screen - DUH!), Voice Memos (don't even have a microphone on the thing so what's the point?)...

If Steve Jobs happens across this blog, here are a few things that, maybe, you might consider for the Touch...

==> How about a way of subscribing to podcasts via the device itself and then the ability to "update all podcasts". I can do this, rather clunkily (if that's a word) via RSSPlayer. I'd rather be able to do it natively. I mean, you can update podcasts, one at a time, via "get more episodes", but this is an UGLY KLUDGE and could be done much easier.

--> An all app inclusive updater - my NY Times app, RSSPlayer(when I use it), etc... all require that i open the app and have it running. An update app that one by one updates all of these apps would be awesome. Or maybe put it in with the podcast updater things I mentioned before?

--> Maybe talk to an app designer or two about data persistence. I'd love to get a weather app that had persistent data. Most want to "update" when you open them, but if you are away from wifi (as I am at work) it would be nice to at least see what the weather outlook is going to be. Some people don't have access to wifi or 3G or whatnot wherever they go. I could do this on my Palm Pilot and PocketPC.

==> A quick way of getting to settings - as mentioned above. To conserve the battery, I ALWAYS kill wifi and dim the screen to the darkest screen setting I can stand for what I am doing. It would be cool if I didn't have to go to settings-wifi, settings-brightness, etc... Maybe even just an icon that you smack that toggles a power saving mode that you can set up by itself.
